a conversation with a friend

Had a little chat with a good friend in a Korean pub last night, in the end the conversation turned into a continuation of the talk between my Dad and myself in the afternoon: how one could run his/her life without falling through the crack of an enjoyable life into an undesirable misery. He had a couple of good points that reminded me of something important, a good perception of ourselves that gives us the best estimation of who we are and what we can do, a pair of insightful eyes to spot the best slot in the society that we can place ourselves into at a specific point in time and the positive attitude we need to do whatever we love to do in that given slot.

These are all basic, simple and yet powerful points. The reason that it created some earthquake at the bottom of my heart is how much cynicism I've developed to reject those ideas: Mapping these ideas to reality ain't always a smooth process. The perception of ourselves could be wrong, the slot of the society might not be desirable, we probably don't know what to do with our lives and even if we know we may not be able to do that, etc.

Folks who live with a tight budget, a lost job, a devalued apartment still needs to pay the mortgages, a pair of parents with no stable sources of income and health insurance coverage probably know where those cynicism come from. Folks who have to struggle with the hefty property price which is so prohibitive that even a modest dream seems out of reach might understand these frustrations. Folks who had experienced the kind of insecurity associated with the lack of money, the family problem or discrimination of any sorts may as well agree with it. Very few have all these problems but many of us share some of them.

Therefore we should feel fortunate if we are doing something we like to do at the moment. It takes some people shorter time to get there as opposed to the others due to their own diligence, talent and certainly the environment in which they grew up. It is a privilege that we should all try to get and just because it is a privilege, it is somewhere higher up in the Maslow's Pyramid compared to the butter and bread. As for myself, I would carefully store that into a well decorated box somewhere secretive, step back, take a deep breath and try to get my share of food first.

Thanks my friend for the insightful conversation.

Benelux

Article Reading - Self-Confidence

One of the Harvard Business Review articles talking about how to To Lead More Effectively, Increase Your Self-Confidence

"When it comes to leadership in the workplace, the primal spring of self confidence is an understanding of what you have accomplished and what you feel you can do next."

Three questions we may wanna ask ourselves:
(quote)
  1. What do you do well?
  2. Why should people follow you?
  3. What have you done to earn the trust of others?

Unrest in China: Unrest on the western front

Any bloody violence toward any ordinary people should not be tolerated, regardless of the reasons. 140 dead, 800 wounded. Communist Party's ass will be kicked badly if there is no death sentence.being executed. Let the fucking stupid ethnic minorities policies alone.

Rwanda Hotel - We are not that different after all

Rwanda genocide was one of the most brutal and deadly tragedies in human history. It happened merely 15 years ago, at a time when most of us believe that the unprecedented prosperity would leave the remote memory of genocide behind us. And yet it happened relentlessly and it will be one of our ugliest scars that will never disappear. The hatred between different ethnic groups (Hutu and Tutsi) was the immediate cause of that slaughter, but the UN and some of the western countries' indifference during the course of the incident assisted them.

The story of Rwanda Hotel is similar to that of the Schindler's list. What strikes me the most is the incapability or reluctance of some of us to put our feet into the shoes of the people whose basic human rights (like survival) are being deprived of and provide our help if possible. I still remember CCTV reporting the massacre in Rwandan in 1994 when I was 12 years old. It sounded so far away that it seemed to be some kind of sad stories that you read in the novel,  which made your heart go into spasm out of the basic sympathy for a short while before it was safely ignored. There is a Chinese proverb goes like: Only take care of the snow in your own doorway, even the frost on other people's roof tile is not your business. According to what happened in Rwanda 1.5 decades ago, it seems to be one of the universal natures of the human beings. However, at least the application of our selfishness to the area of basic human rights like the right to survive is something that we should be ashamed of and fight against.

One of the theories in the idea of Communism that I agree with is that the history of our development is the history of the class struggle. There are always some people trampling on other people's right in pursuit of their own interest. It was, is and will be like this for a long time. There is probably no better way of organizing the human society because it matches the human nature. We are just more civilized kind of animals and we are flawed. But as our society are evolving, we shouldn't allow those things like genocide from happening again, even if we can get or at least not lose any of our interest from it. What happened in Darfur is one example. I understand the complication of the problem since we are getting 1/10 of our oil supply from there, but the cost of losing the moral ground is too dear to be sustainable.

I also remember when 911 happened, I was in the dorm together with my 3 roommates. Our feeling at that time was a mixture. We were sorry about the tragedy because so many people died. I even dreamed of me being one of the passengers in the plane that was used to attacked the World Trade Center and the feeling of that was so scary and desperate. But we also feel a sense of happiness since there were finally some people who stood up and fought against the American Imperialists. I feel ashamed of it just as Sharon Stone should be ashamed of calling the Sichuan earthquake last year a Karma. The ideology or the attitude to a specific incident or the impression toward a country, should never surpass the importance of the basic human rights. They are lives, just like you and me and our family. We are human beings, we are not that different after all.

Rwanda hotel is a good movie.

The Art of the Gaps

One of the best techniques of governing and manipulating almost everything is to set up a lofty standard when the average level is well below it. By maintaining a gap between the ideals and the realities, there would be room for double standards and space for fulfilling one thing in the name of another. Followings are some applications in China:
  1. Google is accused of providing vulgar and lewd contents to children in China. (....yes, baidu is always pure and innocent)
  2. The recent import prohibition of Renault for quality reasons. (good move, but how about the quality of our own cars....)
  3. The fact that many cases of embezzlement is the outcome of the struggle for political power (who doesn't?)

Articles reading - The lessons of 1937

The article was written by Christina Roman, who is the chairwoman of Obama's council of economic adviser. The original article is here:

The point she wanted to make is the fact that the beacon of light in the smothering darkness of the economic crisis that we are seeing right now doesn't justify the cut for the financial stimulus and other means to restore the normal financial policy, as some of the U.S. senators suggested.

What happened around 1937 are basically as following:
  • Prior to 1937 since Roosevelt's inauguration, America had enjoyed a rapid economic growth and made a significant progress in terms of soaring up the real GDP growth rate and lowing down the unemployment rate after the Great Depression, thanks to the big stimulus package and the loose monetary policy.
  • In 1936 and 1937, a series of policies were made which trapped the America into the second severe recession since the Great Depression. These policies include the cancellation of the financial stimulus package and the tight monetary policy, among others. The Fed enforced the tight monetary policy by doubling the legitimate reserve requirements for the banks from the perspectives that they should have more controls if the inflation would develop and the banks simply have too much excess money. The banks, on the other hands,  could hardly forget the scars the Great Depression left on them and chose to make a reasonable cushion on top of the already doubled reserve requirement by lending out much less. Capital therefore become more expensive.
What she thinks the policy makers should pay some attentions to are:
  • The urge for restoring the normal financial policy is strong for different reasons, but they should be resisted because without a special treatment, businesses wouldn't ignore the pains and scars left over from the last crisis and recover the confidence automatically.
  • The loose monetary policy and the provision of the strong stimulus package need to be carried out before full employment rate is reached. Any premature withdrawal will have the potential of causing a recession within a recession.
  • When it comes to the long run fiscal situation, some fundamental changes are needed. One example would be the health care reform which are about to happen in America right now.

Nothing is more important than reading

Almost all the people who I admire are bookholics. The fact that they are bookholics is not the reason that I admire them but is precisely the root cause of so many characteristics that make them the kind of people I admire. There aren't any skills that are more important than being able to selectively read, comprehand and absorb the valuable, relevant and updated information in the era of information explosion. Mark Cuban, an American billionare, said that he usually spent 4~5 hours to read everyday in the course of 20 years since he stepped into the IT & Sport industry. Without that, he wouldn't be able to understand the lastest trend and ideas that would help him to steer his enterprise to a promising direction. It is a pity that I didn't develop the habbit of reading when I was young. Well, I hope it is not too late.

Python is cool

I wrote a python program a little bit more than 2 years ago when I was applying a job in Fast Search in Norway (now a subsidiary of Microsoft), though the outcome of the application is a bit disappointing because they cut off that position in the last stage, I was pretty impressed by the elegance of Python as a language.

Today I did a little bit recap of Python in the hopes that I can use it to write a little domain specific language to encode auto completion logic for shells (like bash, because it is kind of awkward to write anything relatively complicated in bash script). The more I read about it the more I like this little cute language. Among all the features it offers, I especially appreciate its tolerance of different kind of programming paradigms, including that of the functional programming.

Green Dam-Youth Escort

I am pretty tired of this clumsy trick played by our comrades this time. As one of the ancient proverbs goes, shutting up people's mouths is much more difficult than controlling the flood. I don't know who made this decision in the first place but from every single aspect that I can think of, I can not justify this god damn move at all. It is either they are stupid or I am bloody retarded.

I hope my father can watch the video that I posted on the Youtube, I want to get access to my beloved Wikipedia after I come back to China. I really hope that our comrades are able to realize that things wouldn't go smoothly as they expect in this direction. As LuXun put it, you can either die in the silence or you can Erupt. Suppressing ideas never succeeded in making them go away. (quote: Obama's speech to the Muslim World, Cairo, Egypt, 4th June, 2009)

Is that too much a luxury to ask??

Some reflections on this CFA Level 1 thingy

Just made my way back to Dublin from Goteborg. It was the fourth flight I took in the past 5 days and to be honest my heart was dangling in the middle of the air in every single journey until the aircraft successfully landed on the runway in the Dublin airport couple of hours ago. The Air France tragedy obviously casted too much a shadow to my heart and I felt really sad for those who got killed in this calamity.

Good thing is that I finally finished the CFA level 1 exam. There wasn't a bigger sense of relief for a long time. Retrospectively, the course of the 4 month preparation was a little bit of painful but pretty fruitful process. The not so good habbit of procrastination again put me into the situation where I have to struggle a lot couple of weeks before the exam, but now I am happy to say that I survived it.

The feeling of being able to answer those questions with respect to the concepts that were once very intimidating and mysterious to me was good, despite the fact that I failed to answer many of them because the extent to which I prepared all the materials wasn't very well rounded. Even if I would pass it this time, I will still need a comprehensive review of the contents that are covered in the level 1 materials.

I am not sure whether I would ever need to use what I learnt in this process in my career. I am a software engineer working with the system software. Even if I got the chance to work for the big names in the banking industry, it is not very likely that they would need an analyst or accociate with the software engineering background or an engineer with a lot of financial knowledge.

But all that do not matter to me that much right now. The bottom line is if I still feel that I can build up something out of that which can help me to appreciate more of the the world around me, I will continue doing it. I like Steve Jobs' 2005 commercement address in Stanford U. If enough dots are built in one's life, with a bit of luck, hopefully someday (s)he will be able to connect them all together.

an excerpt from the cfa preparation material, very funny

Ginnie Mae, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac all guarantee the timely payment of scheduled interest and principal payments from their mortgage-backed securities, They are able to do this because they only purchase or underwrite loads that conform to certain standards regarding borrower credit ratings, load size, and the ratio of each load to value of the property securing it.

(It's My Life, by Bon Jovi, hongchao译)

Some thoughts on Obama's "Faith" chapter in The Audacity of Hope

As a non believer, I always find it difficult to seriously commit myself to any religious believes, though in some circumstances, I do resort to the super natures of some sort when I feel absolutely helpless. I do feel guilty for that because I asked for their help without even believing in them. Yet at the same time, I strongly feel that being completely convinced before any commitment to them must be one of the most fundamental respects to them if they truly exist.

On the flight from Gothenburg to Dublin today, I got the chance to read the Faith chapter in Obama's The Audacity of Hope. I was always curious about the reason why a wise man with very complicated culture background and profound understanding of the diversification of human beings like Barack Obama, who is extremely good at reasoning, discovering and making compromises between the ideals and reality, could sincerely believe in a super nature without any doubts about its actual existence. The chapter did give me some ideas about his own journey to where he is right now in terms of faith.

Obama built a good understanding of most of the religious systems in the world thanks to his mother. His mother, who is an anthropologist, is not a believer herself, yet she believes that an understanding of different kinds of religious systems is essential to a well rounded education. Therefore, by the time when Obama became a community organizer after his graduation, though he has a good knowledge about the Christianity, he fell short of being a Christian. He was able to get baptized only after he realized that without committing himself to it, there would always be an invisible wall between him and those people with whom he sang the same song, shared some of the views and traditions and did a lot of similar things together. After devoting himself to it, he could have a place to ground his faith upon and a community to dispel his loneliness, among others reasons. However, in his book he also talked about his struggles when the ideas of some of the hardcore Christians conflict with his own liberal thoughts. He even questioned whether he was a true Christian after running for the U.S senator couple of years ago. At last, he concluded that the commitment to Christian doesn't mean that he couldn't have doubts on it.

It all sounds natural, it is the Obama we know about, intelligent and frank, no real surprise.

Going back to my own life, it is really difficult for men and women with backgrounds similar to me (which are a lot in PRC, I would say) to share the same view over religions as Mr. Obama and other Christians. We were taught the ideas of communism when we were in middle school. In retrospect, though practically impossible, the essence of the idea is good. As other believe systems, the final goal of communism is to create a heaven like society where everybody is equal, everybody contributes to the whole society and gets when needed. For me, the biggest difference is instead of doing everything we can to get to the heaven or a better "next life" at the mercy of the super natures who may or may not exist, they wanna create the heaven by themselves. Probably it is improbable due to the nature of the human selfishness, but that is the exact reason why I feel difficult to believe in God. If we are trading our loyalty to God to some sort of a better life in the future, it doesn't seem to be spiritually pure any more, it is just another expression of our selfishness. If that is the case, the ideal communism seems to be more appealing to purify the human nature than most of the religions, despite the damage it has caused.

Maybe, just because human beings are selfish, the "selfish" religion is the only way out.

Status report

Haven't played basket for ages now, since I don't have the "time". As soon as I saw this picture, I was reminded that the notion of "don't have time to do sth" is a joke per se and better not to be used to describe something one really wanna do.

Barack playing b-ball in his transition office in Chicago.

The public transportation in Dublin is at best unsatisfactory and a disaster at worst. After weighing the cons/pros as well as the money in my pocket, I decide to buy a bike and cycle everyday to my office, the distance of which is 10 km from my apartment. Sounds a little bit tough, but I found it quite refreshing, adventurous and enjoyable to think of my little plan, the 3 euros saved per day, sharing the road with the cars and singing "xing xing dian deng" loudly back & forth from the office & home.

These 1 some months in Dublin went pretty grand in terms of work. Got the chance to learn something really interesting and useful without feeling like an illiterate in many occasions. Co-workers are pretty nice and there is a strong atmosphere of learning-by-doing in the whole team. However, with all the confidence I built for my English as a Chinese, I strongly feel it still fall short of satisfactory in some aspects. Hope that in the months to come, everything is gonna be better.

One downsides, among others, is that my gf xixi and myself both feel it is painful to stay away from each other for a long time. For ppl without any religious believes, probably the lovers can play that role to some extente and stabilize our emotions when they fluctuate, support our feet when they are unsteady. Anyways, I think we both get it and I hope I can have a nice and constructive talk with THE important guy waiting to meet me on 26th, Dec.

American Stories, American Solutions

Nästa, IBM software lab, Dublin
